Company Profile

Originally from Bowmanville , Fen Laird comes from a well established tradition of carpenters, cabinetmakers and house builders. Notables to mention: his uncle Ernie Laird who was a well known builder in the Bowmanville area as well as his grandfather Walter Radage who managed the woodworking shop at MacLaughlin Lumber in Kingston. Building on this foundation, Fen began his carpentry career working with a framing crew in Oshawa and Peterborough in 1975.Repairs, remodelling and residential extentions built layers of confidence and experience until he completed the requirements of Ontario’s Ministry of Skills Development and became fully licensed in 1985.

As a journeyman, work has taken him to Barrie throughout the 80’s and Kingston in the early ‘90’s, with a full settling down here in the Limestone City since 2000. The name Frontenac Build & Design was established then.

Fen’s commitment, attention to detail and care for his clients have resulted in many repeat customers over the years, who have come to rely on his practical approach, pursuance of excellence, integrity and business ethics.

Commitment to the community has been demonstrated by being an active member of the Kingston Home Builder’s Association as well as a long time correctional volunteer in a number of the areas correctional institutions.

Green and eco friendly building contributes to a healthier indoor environment, reduced heating and air conditioning costs as well as makes the most of products that will ensure a sustainable future for us all. Here at Frontenac Build & Design, we participate in the Energy Star builder’s program as well as CanMet Energy workshops with Natural Resources Canada. We promote a number of “green” technologies and building techniques that leave a reduced impact on the environment. Construction and project management is closely monitored to reduce waste and envision our employees to build something that will endure into the future. Expect Frontenac Build & Design to provide you with solutions and viable alternatives. Here are some things that we promote:

Legalett Geo-Slab: structural slab on grade construction which can be heated with air or hydronically. This system developed in the 1970’s in Sweden drastically reduces environmental impact on your property as well as eliminates the need for footings and a full foundation. We also offer other types of radiant floor heating solutions dependent on your particular needs.

Logix, Amvic and Fox insulated concrete forms are a few of the ICF products we have had training and work with. ICF construction has the benefits of superior building envelope qualities, reduced sound transmission as well as security from the forces of nature.

Insuldeck floor system for suspended radiant heated concrete floors.

Thermapan Structural Insulated Panels, the next step beyond conventional framing with greatly increased insulation values as well as greatly reduced thermal bridging.

Luxone Home Automation: It all starts with the Miniserver. What you would like your house to intelligently do for you is only limited by your imagination. European innovation for both new and existing homes has come to North America.
